Magic Nature
Magic in Covenant is divided by the nature through which the user interacts with the elements of reality.
Everything that exists is composed of fundamental elements that can be shaped under two opposing philosophies: Form and Void.
Biblical reference: Genesis 1:2 — "the earth was formless and void". The Void is the primordial state of pure potential; Form imposes structure upon it.
The Elements
Elements are the building blocks of creation. Though neutral in essence, their manifestation changes drastically depending on the nature of who channels them.
- Common Elements: Fire, Air, Lightning, Earth, Water, Ice, Shadow, and Metal.
- Unique Elements:
- Light: Exclusive to Form. Represents truth, structure, and revelation.
- Darkness: Exclusive to Void. Represents the abyss, entropy, and the unknown.
⚖️ Form
Form gives structure to the shapeless. It imposes patterns, creates boundaries, defines reality. It is the magic of civilization, protection, and justice.
- Philosophy: Form takes what lacks definition and grants it purpose. Where there is molecular chaos, Form imposes cellular structure. Where there is dispersed energy, Form concentrates it at a point. For Form, magic is a tool to perfect the world and keep it safe from degradation.
- Style: Disciplined and precise. Form doctrines usually manifest with perfect geometric shapes, bright runes, and white or golden light. Predictable but extremely solid.
- Typical Doctrines:
- Oxygenation (Healing): Structures blood flow, optimizes cellular respiration, imposes an ordered regeneration pattern on damaged tissues.
- Crystal Prison (Earth/Ice): Traps the enemy in rigid molecular structures.
- Directed Lightning (Lightning): Vibrates air particles to create an electrical potential with a precise trajectory toward the target.
- Condensed Fireball (Fire): Creates a perfect sphere of fire from the carbon and oxygen in the air, with defined shape and controlled radius.
- Attack (Offensive): Based on Judgment and Restriction. Attacks through channeling pure energy or compact elements to "correct" the enemy's existence. Its attacks are direct and seek maximum efficiency.
- Weaknesses: It is rigid. If the enemy breaks the rules of the battlefield, Form users struggle to adapt. Requires total concentration and a mental state of calm and discipline.
- Disadvantages and limitations: Cannot return things to pure potential; can only maintain or restore what already exists. Overloading Form magic can turn the user into a dogmatic being, losing the ability to feel emotions or empathy in favor of pure logic.
🔥 Void
Void returns things to pure potential. It dissolves structures, transforms matter into energy, releases what was contained. It is the magic of untamed nature, passion, and entropy.
- Philosophy: The Void is the primordial state of the universe, prior to all form. Its users do not destroy: they liberate. They dissolve the bonds that hold matter together, returning it to its state of maximum potential. For the Void, structures are temporary prisons of energy.
- Style: Erratic, explosive, and devastating. Void doctrines manifest as dark flames, black lightning, fractures in space, and liquid shadows. Visually savage and difficult to control.
- Typical Doctrines:
- Sacrifice (Healing): Restores life by draining it from enemies, allies, or the environment itself. Healing is fast but violent and often leaves scars.
- Internal Combustion (Fire): Uses the oxygen in the enemy's body to burn them from within, releasing the energy stored in their cells.
- Dissolution (Lightning): Releases the electrochemical bonds of the enemy's body, dissolving their molecular structure.
- Burning Tree (Fire): Transforms a tree into pure flames, releasing all the solar energy stored in its matter over decades.
- Attack (Offensive): Based on Liberation and Overload. Its attacks seek to overwhelm defenses by releasing energy massively and unpredictably. Massive, destructive, and does not distinguish friends from foes if not careful.
- Weaknesses: It is self-destructive. If the user loses control, the magic dissolves their own body. Unstable and unreliable in long-duration combat if sacrifice is not constant.
- Disadvantages and limitations: Incapable of building or protecting durably. Prolonged use corrodes body and mind, leading the user toward madness or physical disintegration under the weight of their own power.
How Magic Works
How is it invoked? It is invoked through attunement with the soul's own nature. An individual is born with affinity to Form or Void.
- Form users channel mana through discipline, mantra, and iron will.
- Void users channel mana through intense emotion, instinct, and sacrifice of vital energy.
What is its origin? It arises from the fundamental duality of the universe. Before the Big Bang, everything was Void: pure potential without form. The primordial explosion was the first act of Form, imposing structure on chaos. Since then, Form and Void battle for dominance: Form creates stars and life; Void consumes them and returns them to potential. Mana is the fluid that connects both poles.
What does it look like?
- Form: White, golden, or bluish glows. Geometric shapes, defined glyphs, and harmonic sounds (like a choir or bells).
- Void: Dark colors, reds, violets, or blacks. Fractal shapes, smoke, shadows, and discordant sounds (like rumbles or whispers).
Difference between Magic and Matter The mechanical distinction is maintained:
- Matter (Physical): Exists on its own (a stone, a natural fire). Obeys common physical laws.
- Magic (Mana): Is an energy structure that imitates an element.
- Form Fire imposes structure: creates a controlled flame with precise temperature, size, and direction.
- Void Fire releases potential: dissolves the bonds of matter, transforming it into pure, uncontrollable energy.
Protections work the same: magical armor interrupts the mana structure (whether Form or Void), while physical armor stops mass.
What makes magic easier? Acting according to your nature. A Knight of Form protecting their group channels their power fluidly. A Herald of Void releasing energy without restrictions unleashes immense power.
What makes it harder? Attempting to use the opposite nature is impossible; the soul rejects the contrary frequency. What is difficult is controlling intensity: Form can become inert (powerless) and Void can become uncontrollable (dissolving the user).
Are there dangers in using it?
- Form → Mental Petrification: The user loses the capacity for change, becoming a living statue of rules and logic, unable to react to the unexpected.
- Void → Entropic Corruption: The body falls apart. Flesh becomes shadow or soot, and the mind is lost in a frenzy of meaningless liberation.
Arcane Mechanics
Magic is neither infinite nor free. Every act of will that alters reality has a price.
1. Cost (Mana)
Mana is the available mental and spiritual energy.
- Recovery: Mana regenerates slowly (except for specific doctrines). It can also be recovered with potions.
- Depletion: Reaching 0 mana causes "Magical Fatigue" (total Silence and -50% movement for 1 turn).
2. Risk (Nature Overload)
Using magic intensively accumulates "Residue" in the soul. If the user's tolerance limit is exceeded, a negative effect activates according to affinity.
| Overload Level | Form Effect (Stasis) | Void Effect (Backlash) | | :------------------------------ | :-------------------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------- | | Mild (3 doctrines/turn) | -10% Movement Speed. | 5% damage to own health. | | Moderate (6 doctrines/turn) | Rigidity: You cannot dodge (Evasion = 0). | Magical Bleeding: Lose 5% health per turn. | | Critical (Ultimate use) | Crystallization: Stunned for 1 turn after finishing the doctrine. | Collapse: Receive double damage from any source for 1 turn. |
3. Mitigation (Foci)
Magical equipment (Staves, Books, Talismans) acts as a heat sink for the soul.
- A good focus allows casting more doctrines before suffering Overload.
- Casting magic without a focus (bare hands) costs +50% mana and generates immediate Overload.
Physics of Magic
What happens when a doctrine hits armor or a shield?
Interaction Table: Magic vs Matter
| Attack | vs Physical Armor | vs Magical Armor | vs Flesh | | :-------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :------------------------------- | | Physical Projectile (Arrow, Bullet) | Bounces or Pierces (depending on Tier). | Impacts with less damage | Critical Damage (x1.5). | | Form Magic (Light, Ice) | Ignores 50% Defense. Perfect structure passes through imperfect matter. | Collision. Cancel each other out (Damage reduced 75%). | Normal Damage. | | Void Magic (Fire, Shadow) | Deterioration. Damages armor first (lowers defense), then flesh. | Instability. May break the barrier instantly or bounce doing nothing (50/50). | Massive Damage (x2), but random. |
Are people born with it? Yes. Every living being is born with an aligned "spark". An individual of Form will never be able to cast a Void doctrine, and vice versa. This affinity is absolute and defines the user's path in the world.
